Course Selection Tips

Course Selection Tips

To declare your intended major, do you need to fulfill the major pre-requisites?
  • Plan ahead! Generally it takes 2-3 terms to fulfill the major pre-requisites.
  • Go to the Program Catalog for the major pre-requisites of your intended major
Does the class need any approval?
  • Approvals should be sought when you need special consideration to waive course enrollment requirements.
  • Read through the course catalog, as some courses require prior instructor’s approval.
What common core area is your course fulfilling?
  • Courses from your School/ Major Requirements might have fulfilled the common core area. You can resue up to 9 credits only.
  • Make sure your courses are listed under the updated common core list!
Are you taking 12-18 credits in this term (only applicable to Fall/Spring Term)?
  • We recommend that you take an average of 16 credits in each regular term (except Winter and Summer Term).
  • If you want to take more than 18 credits, you will need strong reasons and special approval on SIS.
Are there any co-requisites/ pre-requisites for the course?
  • Each lab course has a respective lecture course as the co-requisite
  • Most of the higher level science courses have pre-requisites. Make sure you plan ahead to avoid delay in your study progress.
Do you have any alternative course choice in case it is full?
  • Some courses get filled up very quickly. It is a good idea to have a backup plan so that you can register for a course of your own interest, as well as fulfilling certain requirements.

If you are unsure about how to select your courses, meet with the advisors!
